Fellowships

Each year a few fortunate students are awarded a writing studio in the Rose O'Neill Literary House. These fellowship rooms are on the third floor, which insures quiet and no interruptions. With 24-hour access to the House, and other privileges and responsibilities, the Literary House Fellows become valued members of our community.

Fellowships will be awarded to students in their junior or senior year who are engaged in a major writing project.

Fellows will contribute to the life of the house by coming to work here regularly, by participating in Literary House events—including special meals for Fellows—and by curating their own event.

Brandon Righi '07, a 2006-2007 Literary House Fellow, described the experience as a crucial component of his senior year. "The room truly became a refuge," Righi said, "a sane space seemingly apart from campus, but still so close to it. The fellowship room, and the corresponding year of more or less living in the Lit House, is among my fondest memories of going to school at Washington College." Liam Daley '07, who worked along Righi, agreed: "I came to associate the fellowship room with real, serious work and my dorm with sleeping and procrastination. It was great having a place where there were no distractions."
